Nationals Collegiate Baseball Team August 1, 2009 Once again, the Nats built a lead but couldn't hold off the Pirates in the end. Bases loaded in the ninth, Nat's go ahead runner got thrown out at home by right fielder in a close play. With a depleted staff to work with, Matt Nodleman started the game and pitched very effectively, as did Pat Moore and iron man Brandan Bartlett. Brig Tyson ahd a big game, tying a team record with 5 hits. The Nationals wish to extend a huge thank you to the many fine players to gave it their all during the season. We are especially thankful to those who stayed for the tournament, all of whom played their hearts out against tall odds. July 31, 2009 In the longest tournament game on record, which included amazing pitching by both sides, the Cardinals finally prevailed in the bottom of the 14th when the winning run scored on a fielders choice. The game saw a record 32 strikeouts, 19 by Nats pitchers, some sparkling defensive plays, an atrocious umpire call, and 2 misplaced outfield flies in which each team's right fielder lost a fly ball in the low Waters Field lights. Each team had opportunities to win the game in extra innings but in the end it was the Cards that pushed across the game winner against a tired Nats hurler. Starter Johnny Bladel was sharp until tiring in the 6th, while relievers Brandan Bartlett and Mark Montgomery shut down the cards over the next 6 innings, holding them to a single hit. Cards reliever Dustin Herbert held the Nats scoreless for the next 7 plus innings. The Nats play the Pirates in an elimination game today at 3 pm. July 30, 2009
Despite some defensive laspes, the Nats built a lead, lost it, then regained it to topple the Senators in an exciting battle in Vienna tonight. The game started our way when league batting champion Johnny Bladel, bound for James Madison, led off the game with a fist pitch home run deep into the muggy night air for a 1-0 lead. The Nats outhit the Senators 11-7, but still trailed in the 8th, leading many worried fans who have seen the boys from Fairfax outplay Vienna this yet find a way to lose. Not this time. Starter Davis Hall kept us in the game with 6 plus solid innings, walking 1 while striking out 4, and giving up just one earned run. Matt Nodleman pitched a run less inning, followed by Max Langford, who pitched the eigth and struggled with his control, giving up one run, allowing the Senators to tie the game. Closer Mark Montgomery shut the door in the ninth for his 8th save this season. Alex Siegle and Kyle Paeplow's clutch hitting in the 8th made the difference in this game.
July 28, 2009
Kyle Paeplow took matters into his own hands by limiting the Grays to 1 hit over 7 innings, and blasting a 2 run homer, along with a sac RBI. Newly minted League batting champion Johnny Bladel added 3 hits to lead the hitting barrage. The Nats will now face Vienna Thursday night at 7pm at Waters Field. Vienna defeated the Pirates later this evening to become the regular season champion. July 28, 2009
An up and down season ended on a high note sunday night at Madison HS with a 12-9 victory over the Grays. Coach Nolan used 7 pitchers, include Brig Tyson, who pitched and played every position on the field. While his performance as catcher is under debate, he pitched a scoreless 8th inning, relying on an assortment of sneaky fastballs and blazing off speed oferings to a confused trio of batters. Alex Seigal contributed a homrun, with Johnny Bladel and Mike Stancik had multiple hit games. Max Langford picked up the victory while Mark Montgomery collected his 5th save. Kudos for Johnny Bladel, who won the League batting title with a .356 batting average by 33 percentage points, the largest margin in recent memory. July
22, 2009 On another pleasant evening in Vienna, the Nats did everything right except win. Taking a 5-0 lead late into the game, a lost opportunity for a double play and some timely hitting by the Senators tied the game. Kyle Paeplow pitched exceptionally well and deserved a victory. Relievers Nodleman, Bartlett, Langford and Montgomery easily pitched well enough to save the game. Vienna hammered Vienna'a starter but fell silent to Vienna's side arming reliever. But in the bottom of the ninth, it looked liked a Nats victory when Aaron Miller doubled to center to lead off and was sacraficed to third by Brig Tyson. Miller was stranded, and Vienna pushed accross a run in the ninth that held up. The evening before, the Pirates won 7-1, despite even hitting. The Nats again could not bring runners home, having stranded what seemed like 50 or 60 runners. July 20, 2009
Tennessee Tech's Chason Choate pitched 6 strong innings, allowing one unearned run for the hard fought victory. The Nats started strong, taking an early 3-1 lead and made it stick to the end. George Mason's Brandon Bartlett struck out the side in the 7th, followed by nearly flawless relief by Dartmouth's Max Langford and Longwood's Mark Montgomery in the ninth. This game featured sparkling defense from both sides and great pitching as the Cardinals middle and late inning relief were also superb, with several hurlers topping 90 mph on the radar on a weather threatening night in McLean. On Saturday night, the Nats beat the Putty Hill Gold team from Maryland in 7 innings at Madison HS in Vienna. The Nats travel to Fairfax to take on the Pirates in their last encounter this season. Then its Vienna on Wednesday and Friday, and the DC Grays on Saturday and Sunday to finish the regular season. The post-season tournament starts next week.
July 17, 2009
For the second time in three nights, the Nats visited Vienna to take on the first place Senators, only this time the outcome was more to Fairfax's liking. Jumping on Vienna's starter for 3 first inning runs, Vienna never recovered. Gardner Webb's Kyle Paeplow pitched 5 plus solid innings to register the win. Matt Nodlman (Presbyterian), Max Langford (Darmouth) and Mark Montgomery (Longwood) combined to hold the Senatory scoreless. Paving the way for Nats hitter were UVA's Steve Kouril and James Madison's Johnny Bladel, each with 2 hits. RBI's were contributed by Alex Swensen (Jacksonville), Nick Caito (St Leo) and Brig Tyson (George Mason). The Nats are back to James Madison on Saturday, where they are undefeated this year. July 15, 2009
On another beautiful night in Vienna, confusion surrounds the final score as few believe 17 runs were actually pushed across by Vienna against Fairfax pitching. One possible explanation is that the score was really 3-0, but registered as 2 touchdowns and a field goal. Other evidence supports the malfunction theory, as the stat line shows Nats pitchers punched out 15 Vienna batters over 8 innings. There were other anomalies. For example, long time fans noticed that Vienna hit a made to order double play ball in the 4th, yet the line shows 8 runs scored in that inning. Details later so the mystery unfolds.
More details after the investigation

Coach Nolan decided to give Johnny Bladel (James Madison) the start against the team that has had our number all season long. The strategy worked as Bladel shut down the powerful Pirate bats for 5 1/3 innings strong innings. Relievers Brandan Bartlett, Matt Nodelman and Randy Leeson limited the Pirates to 1 hit over the last 4 innings On the offensive side, Pirate pitchers consistently kept the Nats on bases with their wildness, walking 12, while boys from Faifax banged out 11 hits to take the victory. Outfielder Alex Seigle led all hitters with 4 hits. July 12, 2009

After finishing off the Grays in a continuation game Monday night, the Nats lost in the regularly scheduled game later in the evening, then again on Tuesday night 10-5. Details from the games are sketchy, and highlights few and descriptions ugly--errors and lost chances. DC's Maury Wills Stadium is proving to be an unfriendly place for Fairfax, and they return to the Nation's capital on Friday to try again. After a night off tonight, its the Pirates on Thursday, the only team the Nats have been unable to master. July 4, 2009
In Vienna last night, game one featured Gardner Webb's Josh While tossing 6 innings of 1 hit ball over the powerful Senator's hitters. The combination of Matt Nodelman (Presbyterian), Max Langford (Dartmouth) and Mark Montgomery (Longwood) shut out Vienna over the last 3 innings to preserve the victory. The Senators were held to 2 hits for the game. Brig Tyson (George Mason), Johnny Bladel (James Madison) and Richie Brown (Azuza Pacific) were the hitting stars in this well played contest. In game 2, the Nats were well on their way to a double header sweep, when a serious of unfortunate events cost the boys from Fairfax yet another improbable defeat. Through 5 innings of this 7 inning contest, the combination of Davis Hall (Tennessee), Kyle Paeplow (Gardner Webb) and Matt Nodleman (Presbyterian) held the Senators to 2 hits and a 4-2 lead. In the 6th, a catcher's inter fence call cost the Nats a run to make it a 1 run game. With closer Montgomery on to pitch, the situation looked bright as Mark had yet to yield a run this season. A balk call advanced a Senator's runner into scoring position and led to an run on a most untimely error that would ended the game. A subsequent walk off home run allowed the Senators victorious with a most improbable win on night when Vienna collected 4 unearned runs. July 2, 2009
Despite solid pitching by Mike Backes and a huge blast from Nick Lovett, the boys from Fairfax could not overcome the Cards, playing in their home stadium in Waldorf, MD. Details to come in a later edition. Friday night see the boys playing a twin bill against the first place Senators in Vienna tonight.
July 1, 2009
A srong outing by Chason Choate went for naught when the Grays rebounded on Nats relievers following a rain delay. With the offense working hard, the lights stopped the game, which was at Maury Wills Stadium in Washinton DC. More details as they pour in...
June 30, 2009
After a shaky first inning, Kyle Paplow pitched effectively to help keep the Nats even with the Pirates for most of the game. Matt Nodelman, Max Langford and Mark Montgomery all pitched well in relief, and Aaron Miller, Keith Morrisroe and Johnny Bladel had solid at bats. But it was the eight inning nightmare that started the end for the Nats. The Pirates scored 3 runs on 1 hit to seal the victory. The boys return to action tonight against the Grays in Washington DC. June 27, 2009
Two nights after beating the Cardinals by 10-1, Southern Maryland returned the favor yesterday in Lorton, Va. Playing in the midst of the historical Lorton Prison grounds, which feature guard towers pre-dating the Civil War, the Cards scored early and often en route to easy victory. Few things went right for the hometown boys on this sunny afternoon, as they allowed 11 unearned runs. June 27, 2009
Another night at Madison and another victory for the hometown boys, this time against an overmatched Howard County Renegades from the Maryland Colleage Baseball League. Starting pitcher Randy Leeson (Missouri Baptist) struggled with his command but limited the Renegades to 1 run over 4 innings. Branden Bartlett (George Mason) came in relief and looked sharp. Matt Nodleman (Presbyterian) had an easy 7th, while Max Langford (Dartmouth) made short work of the last 2 innings, relying on his exceptional fast ball. Several Nats made strong statements at the plate, headed by Montgomery College's Alex Siegle's 2-run blast to right field in the 4th. Brig Tison (George Mason), playing on his high school field, tripled in 2 runs in the same inning. Our other Alex (Swenson from Jacksonville) hammered a 2 RBI double in the 8th to put the game out of reach. The boys head to prison Sunday to face the Cardinals at 4:30. Game time of our schedule page is incorrect. The field is located on 8400 Lorton Road, just off Silverbrook in Fairfax County. June 26, 2009
Facing a team likely tired from a busy week of baseball, the Nats played a compete game tonight at Madison Field in Vienna. Chason Choate pitched 6 strong innings, allowing a single unearned run in the first inning, but cruising on his way to an easy victory. Davis Hall and Drew Lowry finished off the game by holding the Cards scoreless. The boys return to Madison Saturday night for an interleague game against the Howard County Renegades. On sunday, the Nats play the Cardinals again at Laurel Hill, on the historic former prison grounds. Click on: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AieAVre_wno for a video interview of Coach Nolan.
June 25, 2009
Once again the Nats had their chances, but lack of timely hitting and another pick-off made the difference in this close contest at Paul VI in Fairfax, VA. Kyle Paeplow suffered his first lost but generally looked good, as did Mike Backes and Branden Bartlett in relief. Alex Swenson and Aaron Miller had 2 hits in the losing cause. But it took a spectacular play by the Pirates to save them the game. In the ninth, Swenson doubled to start the inning, followed by a pinch hit single by Brig Tyson, one out later both were in scoring position when Kouril's sinking line drive was snared by a diving center center. His risky play made the difference by saving 2 runs. The boys return to Madison tonight and Saturday night, then at the former historical Lorton prision grounds for a sunday affair.
June 23, 2009
On a pleasant evening at Regency Stadium, Fairfax pounded out 14 hits to overpower the Cardinals. Joshua White (Gardner-Webb) picked up the victory by hurling 6 2/3 shut out innings. He was followed by Matt Nodleman (Presbyterian) and Max Langford (Dartmouth) and closer Mark Montgomery (Longwood). Nats pitchers did not yield a walk while every player recorded at least one hit. Trice Powers (Tennessee Tech) had 2 as did several others, including Mike Stancik (Longwood) who also legged out a triple. The boys are off Wednesday, but begin a long stretch of games leading up to the all star break. June 23, 2009 Notes on schedule change. The July
3 game with the Senators in Vienna will be a double header. After 2
days off, the boys travel to MD to play the Cardinals at Regency Furniture
Stadium. Directions are on the league website and our website. Stadium
address is: 11765 St. Linus Drive, Waldorf, MD 20602. June 20, 2009 On a beutiful night in Vienna, VA, all phases of the Nats game went awry as Vienna pulled away early and often. The boys hoped to rebound Saturday night against Gaithersburg but once the rain gods would show no mercy. June 18, 2009
June 14, 2009 On a nice June Sunday, Chason Choate (Texas Tech) has a strong outing, giving up 3 earned runs over 6 innings, but the an error led to an unearned run which made the difference. Matt Nodleman (Presbyterian) and Davis Hall (Tennessee) pitched scoreless innings to keep the Pirates at bay. Johnny Bladel (James Madison) continued
his strong hitting with 2 more. Mike Stancik (Longwood) added another
RBI in this low scoring affair. Note: box scores for all the games are found on the league web site: clarkgriffithbaseball.com. June 12 2009 The game was shortened to 8 innings when the umpires heard lightening off in the distance, panicked, and halted the action. June
12, 2000 Trice Powers (Tennessee Tech) made another sparkling play at third, and earned high praise by knocking in the winning run in the bottom of the 11th. Keith Morrisroe (Concord) also had a 3 hit night and Richie Brown smacked a home run. Brig Tison (George Mason) had 2 hits, one of which was a pretty single to the right side on a hit- and- run in the deciding 11th inning to set up the winning play. After the game, Coach Nolan said the boys played a great game, obviously pleased with the cluth hitting, reat defense and some outstanding pitching when it was needed. He saw this game as a momentum swing going into the weekend. June 11, 2009 The Nats lost the first game 2-4 against the Pirates on a pleasant evening in Fairfax. Kyle Paeplow (Gardner-Webb) started and looked very sharp, pitching 3 hitless innings. Davis Hall (Tennessee) followed and was rusty, not having pitched all season. Branden Bartlett (George Mason) closed with 3 solid innings, allowing 1 one. Alex Swenson (Jacksonville) has 3 hits and Mike Stancik (Longwood) 2 hits to lead all hitters. The Nats lost their second game to Vienna by the same 2-4 score the next night at home in Fairfax. Nat's pitchers held Vienna scoreless through 7 innings, led by Chason Choate (Tennessee Tech) 5 scoreless innings. All the Senator's run came on one hit--a grand slam--in the 7th. Johnny Bladel (James Madison) started the game and pitched one inning before a 2 hour rain delay finished his evening. Matt Nodelman (Presbyterian) was victimized by the home run, and Josh White (Gardner-Webb) pitched a perfect ninth. On Wednesday, yet
another soggy evening characterized the evening as the Southern Maryland
Cardinals jumped ahead 3 zip and the game was called after 5 innings.
Michael Backes (Lake Erie) and Randy Leeson (Missouri Baptist) shared
mound duties and both were sharp at times but struggled with their rhythm.
June 5,2009 The boys are praticing
